Tube Weaning & Transitions

Feeding tubes can be an essential and life-saving part of a child’s care. When the time comes to move towards oral eating, the transition needs to be gradual, safe and well supported. We help families through that journey, working alongside your child's medical team every step of the way.

Who this support is for

We support children who:

  • Are fed by a nasogastric/jejunal (NG/NJ) tube or gastrostomy (PEG/G-tube) and are medically ready to begin oral eating
  • Eat some food orally but rely on the tube for most of their nutrition
  • Have weaned from a tube but remain anxious or restricted eaters
  • Need to maintain their oral skills and interest in food while receiving tube feeds

Tube weaning is always a team effort. We work closely with your child's paediatrician, dietitian and other specialists, and we do not begin a wean without medical clearance – your child's safety, growth and nutrition always come first.

How we approach tube weaning

Children who have been tube fed have often have fewer chances to practise eating and some have learned that things near their mouth feel unpleasant. So we start where your child is:

  • Building positive, pressure-free experiences with food
  • Developing the oral skills needed to manage food and drink safely
  • Supporting your child's appetite and interest in eating, in coordination with their dietary plan
  • Gradually shifting the balance from tube to oral intake as skills and confidence grow

Every tube weaning journey is different, and we believe the best outcomes come from working as a team. Tube weaning is always approached as a multidisciplinary process, with the plan tailored to your child’s medical, nutritional, developmental and feeding needs.
