Starting Solids

Starting solids is a big milestone, and for many parents, a confusing one. We help families start solids with confidence, and also support babies who may be finding the transition to solids a little harder than expected.

How we can help

Some families come to us before starting solids, wanting to feel prepared and confident. Others seek support when introducing solids hasn’t gone as expected. We can help if your baby:

  • Is getting ready to start solids and you’d like guidance on how to get started.
  • Frequently turns away, cries or refuses food when it’s offered.
  • Persistently gags, coughs or vomits during meals.
  • Is finding it difficult to progress from purees to mashed, lumpy or more textured foods.
  • Needs support moving from a bottle to a cup or straw, including developing the skills needed to drink comfortably and safely.

Starting Solids 101

At First Bites we offer Starting Solids 101 sessions which are designed to give parents practical, evidence-based guidance when starting solids with their baby.

During the individual 45-minute session, we’ll cover:

  • Signs of readiness – what to look for before introducing solids.
  • Feeding approaches – practical guidance on how to introduce food in a way that works for your baby and family.
  • Seating and positioning – setting your baby up for safe and successful eating.
  • Texture progression – understanding how and when to progress textures as your baby develops their skills.
  • Early cup and straw skills – introducing drinking skills alongside solids.

There’s also plenty of time to ask questions and tailor the session to your baby’s individual needs. Following your session, you’ll receive a range of resources to support you at home.
